Abstract

This study aims to observe the translation equivalence and strategies of the greeting and honorific forms contained in Madurese digital folktales. The analysis is focused on three Madurese folktales entitled Rato Islam Onggu’, Ke’ Lesap, and Radhin Saghârâ in which the videos provides three different subtitles, namely Madurese as the source language and English and Indonesian subtitle. These subtitles are analyzed qualitatively related to semantic and pragmatic equivalence based on Baker's theory and translation strategies based on a combination of several theories. The data consist of lingual units, either words or phrases that contain greeting and honorific forms. Based on the findings, there are 94 data of greetings and honorifics which are dominated by the use of personal pronouns classified as the relational honorific system. Most of data have been transferred by applying the full equivalence both semantically and pragmatically. As for the translation strategies, both translators of target languages dominantly apply the literal translation in transferring those greeting and honorific forms, either from Madurese to English or Madurese to Indonesian.
